Here you can see what the children in Nursery have in store as the year goes by, keep up-to-date with key dates for your diary and also access important documents such as class newsletters, curriculum overviews and year group expectations. Welcome to Nursery!

We are really looking forward to working with you and your children this year. This term we are focusing on making friends and feeling secure in the environment.  It is important that we understand the rules and boundaries in Nursery that help to keep us safe and happy.

In Nursery we learn through exploration and play.  We have short teaching sessions to introduce new ideas and then provide activities and resources to enable the children to consolidate these skills and ideas . The adults in Nursery also lead small group activities with the children as well as playing along side the children and modelling new skills and language. As well as having themes that we focus on each half term we also plan activities  around the children’s’ own personal interests, needs and level of development. We will be learning to count, order, recognise, represent and arrange quantities of numbers in different ways and explore 2D and 3D shapes. In literacy we will be sharing stories, rhymes and poems. We say a daily alphabet chant, with actions, in preparation for the school’s phonics scheme which starts in Reception class. The children also do lots of listening and rhyming activities and learn to hear the initial sounds at the beginning of words. We will be doing lots of talking about and retelling of stories through  role play and expressive arts and design.

We are a Catholic Nursery and each week one child will bring home a prayer bag to share with you and your family. As part of our charity work and developing links with the local community we visit the Dementia Group at All Souls’ Church on a regular basis; this was a great success last year and both the children and the group members greatly benefited from the experience. We will also try to do as much learning outside as we possibly can so could you please send your children dressed appropriately for the different weather and seasons.

We are very fortunate to have a P.E and dance teacher, Miss Jade, who takes the children for P.E every Tuesday so could you please make sure your child has a pair of pumps to keep in Nursery and your child will need to come dressed ready for P.E in a school P.E.T-shirt and a pair of shorts/ leggings/jogging bottoms. The children also need to have a   spare set of clothes and a pair of wellies for wet weather – all labelled with their name please.

After the children settle we will start our Nursery class library; we will help your child choose a book which they can take home and share with you, for the week.  We will provide more details of this later in the term.

Going on trips and visiting outside locations is an important part of children’s learning. We hope to have a trip in December to the Belgrade Theatre and plan to book further trips for the Spring and Summer term. We also make use of the school mini bus to visit local places such as Coundon Wedge. You will find any information about upcoming events and trips on our school website.

Each Sunday I will do a Tapestry memo telling you what we have been doing in Nursery each week and letting you know what our learning focuses will be for the following week. We will also let you know what your child has been learning each week via Tapestry.   We will also add photographs and activity information onto the Nursery blog on the school website

Each week we place our Money pot outside the Nursery door and if you are able to, it would be great if you could pop in a weekly £1 donation which helps us to buy such things as cooking ingredients and compost and also replaced broken toys and equipment.

Finally – a few reminders about times and illnesses. Children should arrive for Nursery at 8.30am. For security reasons the side gate into Nursery and All Sorts will be closed at 8.45am prompt – any late comers should enter school through the main reception area.  If your child is absent because of illness could you please inform the office via the Study bugs app in the morning. Children should not return to Nursery until 48 hours after their last bout of vomiting or diarrhoea.
