Y5 learn new lingo!

Year 5 had a blast today at Bablake at the Modern Foreign Languages day. We took part in taster sessions in Spanish, Italian,German and French. We did lots of creative activities and even made our own replicas of the Eiffel Tower. Ask us to teach you how to say hello in a different language!

Well done to all the children: you were a credit to our school!

Here are some pictures of us in action.

Thank you and goodbye to Senorita Martin

Today we sadly waved adios to Senorita Martin who is leaving us this term. We did so in true spanish style with a fun-filled fiesta in the classroom followed by an assembly where Year 5 performed a song in Spanish!

Thank you Senorita Martin for such a great year, for teaching us the Spanish language and opening our eyes to the Spanish culture. We have thoroughly enjoyed our lessons and will miss you very much! We wish you all the best for the future!

¡ Hola chicos y chicas ! ¡ Hola a todos!

Bienvenidos a nuestra seccion de español.

Welcome to Spanish at All Souls Primary School! Since September 2015 we have been leaning Spanish from Year 3 to Year 6 as our Modern Foreign Language (MFL).
The children have weekly Spanish lessons taught by our specialised Spanish teacher Señorita Martin, originally from the city of Jerez (in the south of Spain) . She has been very enthusiastic as the pupils have done really well showing a lot of enthusiasm and hard work during the lessons. They have been covering a wide range of topics so as to develop their understanding of speaking, listening, reading and writing in the Spanish language.
Pupils are encouraged at all times to strive to work things out for themselves, work in pairs and small groups sharing knowledge, and to speak aloud when possible – thereby building confidence.
Pronunciation, memory, pattern finding, sentence building, autonomy, performance and creativity are the concepts at the heart of the resources used.
What are the aims of teaching Spanish?
The National Curriculum for England describes the purpose of learning a language as being:
Learning a foreign language is liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
How is the National Curriculum covered in Spanish lessons?
We believe it is important to learn Spanish as it is the second most natively spoken language in the world and the primary language of more than 20 countries worldwide. It is also the primary MFL language taught in an increasing amount of Secondary schools.
Spanish is taught throughout KS2 on a weekly basis. As Spanish is new to our school this year each child within KS2 will be following the Year 3 scheme of work.

Autumn Term
Pupils in Y3-Y6 were introduced to greet people in Spanish. They learned how to ask and say their names and how to ask how they feel. They practiced the numbers 1-10 and how to ask and give their ages. Their learning was put in practice by performing various activities which includes songs, games and role plays. They also explored some Christmas traditions in Spain and they were taught some Christmas carols.
They did an incredible job putting a lot effort during all the lessons. ¡Buen trabajo chic@s !
This year has also been very special, as our students are very lucky to contact with a school in Spain. The children were very excited to write Christmas cards to their Spanish pen pals.

They also had the opportunity to meet them through a videoconference when they did their first skypeSkype session. It was a very beautiful experience, where the pupils put in practiced the Spanish language skills that they have learned so far,and also they listened to some Spanish Christmas carol and they sang their own version of “Feliz Navidad”. Students and teachers were absolutely delighted!

Some students also took part in the first Spanish Christmas play. They worked really hard, coming early in the morning every day to practice and they were very brave doing a great performance in Spanish. From this space, we would love to thank to all the pupils and their family because they did an extraordinary work!
